What is yoga?

Yoga is the most ancient form of integrated self-development, and yet it is now an established part of our modern culture. Through a wide range of amazing practices, yoga empowers the practitioner to cultivate the head, hand, and heart, and to walk confidently in the world as a dignified human being.

Hatha Yoga builds strength, resilience, and vitality. Meditation (Raja Yoga) and wisdom teachings (Gyana Yoga) endow us with insight and awareness. Bhakti Yoga awakens compassion and empathy, and Karma Yoga encourages us to care and share the holistic benefits of yoga with our entire community.

The Bhagavad Gita says:

"Yoga is balance and evenness of mind" (samatvam).

Yoga instils inner and outer harmony, equanimity, homeostasis, and peace. We take responsibility for our own health and well-being by availing ourselves of a remarkable suite of time-trusted methods.

Yoga is a path. It is the path to restore our innate unity of being, to re-establish natural order in body and mind, and ultimately to reunite us with our spiritual centre. Yoga means to reunite.

We learn to heal ourselves—and then we have the duty to spread the word and guide our brothers and sisters along the same path. This path of return to wholeness is known as Dharma.

Mother Yoga is a vast tree with many branches, so that all her children can find rest within her shade. There is no one who cannot practice and benefit from yoga—whatever their physical or mental condition, ethnicity, gender, disability, or circumstance.

"Yoga makes a Christian a better Christian, a Moslem a better Moslem, a Hindu a better Hindu, and an atheist a better atheist."

"Practise yoga and elevate yourself. Teach yoga and elevate your society."

These were the guiding principles of the Yoga Fellowship when it was founded by a handful of pioneers nearly 50 years ago. Its aim was to encourage the training of skilled yoga teachers and to promote the benefits of yoga equally in our community. This remains our aim as we embark on a new phase of renewal and regeneration.

We will continue to offer and promote a wide range of inspiring events and workshops on all aspects and styles of yoga, to deepen and renew one’s knowledge and understanding.

And we will be a hub—a welcoming community—to connect and support all our members, teachers, and practitioners alike, in the spirit of unity and fellowship.

This is yoga. Join us!
