Surya Namaskara - A Technique of Solar Meditation

This is a wonderful little treasure of a book by a Yoga Master. It covers this ancient Vedic practice in depth, reminding us that this familiar component of every asana class is in fact an ancient ‘prayer in motion’, a series of ritualistic mudras to the sun as a symbol of the Supreme Spiritual Light. A masterpiece.

‘Happiness’ by Mattieu Ricard

Happiness - A guide to developing life’s most important skill

This is a wonderful, engaging book by a Buddhist Monk. Ricard, comes from a rich intellectual tradition and synthesises twenty-five centuries of Buddhist wisdom with neuroscience and cognitive psychology to remind us that happiness is our birthright. The real art in this book is how he conveys his heart-lifting wisdom with simplicity, humour, charm, and exercises on training to be happy!

Ramana Maharshi and the path of self-knowledge

Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi is a towering sage of (Jnana Yoga) Wisdom Yoga, the inner quest of self-knowledge. His life story, set in the sacred hill of Arunachala, is almost mythical, poignant, mysterious and enchanting. Beautifully told in this book by a great writer and poet.

Meditation for the love of it - enjoying your own deepest experience

This is a beautiful book on meditation written by a Yoga adept who gathers meditations from the many paths she has travelled on her own journey. A natural storyteller who shares many simple but profound meditations that opened her heart, along with rich insights into the diverse paths of yoga philosophy.

‘Eastern Body, Western Mind’ by Anodea Judith

Eastern Body, Western Mind

This is a brilliant exposition of the chakras from the perspective of transpersonal Jungian psychology, somatic therapy and childhood development theories. It is fascinating to see how the ancient chakra paradigm correlates with these modern sciences. As such it is a great reference manual on the chakras for the modern Yoga teacher.

‘The Katha Upanishad’ translation by Eknath Easwaran, Penguin Arkana books

Wednesday 8th April @19.30 GMT online

The Kena Upanishad from Eknath Easwaran’s translation

The dramatic story of the Brahman youth, Nachiketas, and his encounter with Yama, the Lord of Death makes up this engaging Upanishad. The wisdom teachings imparted in the dialogue are incredibly rich, including early teachings on Yoga, the mantra Om, meditation, and much more. As ever, we use the
